What is Punch Needle? How My Loop Embroidery Journey Began
Hi, I’m Marta! For over two years now, punch needle embroidery has been a constant part of my life — a passion that came out of nowhere but quickly took over my heart.
I’ve always been an artistic soul, but for a long time, my creativity stayed separate from my professional life. Sure, I worked in graphic design, but that world was all about fitting my ideas into someone else’s framework. My creativity often got stifled, and honestly, it was frustrating.
Then, one day, my corporate job ended, and I realized I didn’t want to go back. I wanted to pursue something that would truly inspire me — even if it started as a simple hobby, I wanted it to fully consume me.
And that’s when Pinterest came into play. As someone obsessed with interior design, I could scroll for hours through home décor and styling ideas. One day, I stumbled across a photo of a product with an unusual texture — and instantly, I knew it wasn’t just a printed design.
That discovery sparked a whole new creative journey. Naturally, I had to add some of these pieces to my own space because decorating is my favorite way to create atmosphere and emotion. And just like that, punch needle embroidery became more than a hobby — it became a part of who I am.
Pinterest and My First Encounter with Punch Needle
One day, I found myself typing into Google: raised embroidery — because that’s what it reminded me of visually — then loop embroidery, and finally, PUNCH NEEDLE embroidery.
I thought: WOW, this isn’t the kind of embroidery I usually picture — you know, the crocheted socks or tablecloths with that classic retro vibe, or, more nicely, that charming vintage feel.
Curious, I typed: “What is punch needle embroidery used for?” And suddenly, I was greeted with an entire gallery of stunning creations: a cozy, sweater-like punch needle coaster; a mirror with a beautiful ocean-inspired punch needle design; and a pillow featuring the cutest little tiger named Leon… AND I WAS HOOKED. I had to know more!
I couldn’t stop there. I opened a new tab and searched: “How to learn punch needle embroidery?” The idea of having something like this in my home, handmade by me, felt amazing! Information was scarce, at least on Polish websites, but I did manage to find a guide translated into Polish by Rose Pearlman: “Punch Needle Embroidery: Discover a New Embroidery Technique.”

One thought kept running through my mind — I HAVE TO ORDER THIS! From that moment, things escalated quickly (in the best way possible). I threw a punch needle into my Allegro cart, added three embroidery hoops — because if you’re going all in, why not go big? A bit of fabric, some yarn, and… tadaa — my order was complete.
The only question left: when would it arrive? Well, getting everything immediately on Polish websites wasn’t exactly easy, so patience became my new best friend.

From Theory to Practice — My First Try with a Watermelon Punch Needle
The moment my package arrived, I tossed the hastily-read theory aside and jumped straight into my first project. It was summer, so of course, I decided to make a little watermelon. I found a reference image online and thought: Okay, this looks great… but how on earth am I supposed to transfer it onto fabric?!
That’s when it hit me — a hoop, a needle, and some yarn were definitely not enough. Unless, of course, you’re a wildly creative Picasso who can improvise directly on the fabric without a single mistake!

At that point, I had no idea that punch needle was a sneaky little beast — capable of letting me unravel everything and start all over again. P.S. I probably would have known if I’d actually read more than the first five pages of the book… but honestly, I just wanted to start creating right away!
First Loops and Big Plans
The very next day, I already knew what I was going to do. There was a lot of work ahead, but I’m nothing if not stubborn — I had to make my first punch needle pillow, or at least a tiny piece, like a small watermelon embroidery.

I do regret not snapping a photo of my very first creation. Probably because I wasn’t entirely proud of it yet. But here’s something I made just a few days later, and I was finally starting to feel the magic of punch needle embroidery.

I think this is the perfect moment to pause and wrap up my very first post about how I started my punch needle embroidery journey. Looking back, I realize that picking up that needle and hoop really changed a lot for me — and the best part? This is just the beginning! :)
I hope you’ll find a little inspiration here, a spark of passion, and maybe even the nudge you need to try something creative yourself.
